Shanghai Medical College Initiates Core Courses of Humanistic Medicine

Shanghai Medical College affiliated with Fudan University initiated a range of core courses of humanistic medicine to promote the medical teaching reform and strengthen the ideological and political education of medical students. On April 13th, a seminar on the construction of the core courses was held at the College.

The construction of “Core Courses of Humanistic Medicine” emphasizes the features of all-around development and pursues an interdisciplinary approach. The courses include history of medicine, philosophy of medicine, medical ethics, medical law, and medical sociology, ensuring the integration of humanistic studies with clinical medicine.

Gui Yonghao, Dean of Shanghai Medical College, remarked in the seminar that excellent medical talents should be cultivated with a broader perspective and more scientific methods in accordance with the strategies of Chinese health management.

Four major tasks will be addressed in the near future to promote the course construction. First, the Committee of Core Courses of Humanistic Medicine would be founded to provide services in the aspects of research, consulting, guidance, and evaluation. Second, humanistic medical courses would integrate the resources of natural science, medicine, humanities, and social sciences, and cover the whole process of clinical medical education. Third, the course construction would value practical experiences and social impacts. Fourth, a student-centered teaching model should be established to enhance the students’ professional quality.

Shanghai Medical College has a tradition of pursuing both general and scientific education. A number of humanistic courses have been offered in the past, including humanities and medicine, comprehensive quality of medical students, preventive medicine, and medical psychology, which receive very positive feedbacks from the students.
