2017 Qiu Shi Award Ceremony Held at Fudan


The 2017 Qiu Shi Award Ceremony, sponsored by Qiu Shi Science & Technology Foundation, was held in the Guanghua Building of Fudan University on September 16th. Among the 400 attendents of the ceremony, were Chairman of the Foundation Mr. CHA Mou Sing, Advisors of the Foundation Professor YANG Chen Ning, Professor SUN Jiadong, Professor HAN Qide, and Professor SHI Yigong, Fudan President Professor XU Ningsheng, and Vice Presidents Professor JIN Li and Professor ZHOU Yaming. The winners of the 2017 Qiu Shi Outstanding Scientist Award, Qiu Shi Scientific Research Team Award, and Qiu Shi Outstanding Young Scholar Award were announced during the ceremony. Two researchers of Fudan University, Professor WANG Yihua from Department of Physics, and Professor BAO Wenzhong from School of Microelectronics, were honored by the Qiu Shi Outstanding Young Scholar Award this year.
The 2017 Qiu Shi Outstanding Scientist Award was presented to Professor CHEN Shiyi of Southern Univeristy of Science and Technology, and Professor XIE Xiaoliang of Harvard University and Peking University. Professor SUN Jiadong and Professor SHI Yigong as the presenters of this award introduced the remarkable contribution of the awardees in their fields of study.
The 2017 Qiu Shi Outstanding Scientific Research Team Award was presented to the rice molecular genetics team. Aside from Professor Wang and Professor BAO, the 2017 Qiu Shi Outstanding Young Scholar Award were also presented to other eight researchers from Peking University, Tsinghua University, University of Science and Technology of China, Huazhong University of Science and Technology, and Chinese Academy of Medical Science.
The Qiu Shi Science & Technologies Foundation was established by Mr. CHA Chi Ming in Hong Kong in 1994. Since its establishment, Qiu Shi has unwaveringly stood by its original value: “Assistant instead of Accolade”, and adovated for scientific and humanistic spirit. From 1994 to 2017, Qiu Shi Awards have been bestowed upon 310 outstanding Chinese scientists, representing the fields of mathematics, physics, chemistry, biology, medicine, engineering and so on. Respectively, 1 individual had received the Qiu Shi Lifetime Achievement Award, 28 for the Outstanding Scientist Award, 169 for the Outstanding Young Scholar Award, and 112 for the Outstanding Scientific Research Team Award (including 13 major research projects, such as artemisinin, synthetic bovine insulin, Tarim Basin desertification, and iron-based superconductivity).
The Second Qiu Shi West Lake Forum was also held at Fudan from September 15th to 16th, focusing on the subjects of engineering and biology. The 2014 Qiu Shi Outstanding Young Scholar Award laureates, Professor YANG Yue of Peking University and Professor XIE Wei of Tsinghua Univeristy, were the organizers of the Forum this year.
