Fudan Establishes Department of Atmospheric and Oceanic Sciences
On April 20th, the Opening Ceremony of the Department of Atmospheric and Oceanic Sciences of Fudan University and also the Symposium on the Development of Atmospheric and Oceanic Sciences were held. The event gathered 20 CAS and CAE academicians along with experts and scholars from the National Natural Science Foundation of China, military departments, and various universities and research institutions. Also, more than 100 teacher and student representatives from different departments and faculties of the University attended the ceremony and witnessed this historic moment.
Zhou Yaming, Vice President of Fudan University, attended the ceremony and delivered a speech. Zhou announced the establishment of the Department of Atmospheric and Oceanic Sciences, and, along with CAS Academician Zeng Qingcun, from the Institute of Atmospheric Physics, CAS Academician Su Jilan, from the Second Institute of Oceanography, and Dong Rong, Director of Shanghai Meteorological Service, jointly unveiled the plaque of the new Department.
Zhang Renhe, CAS Academician and Dean of the Institute of Atmospheric Sciences of Fudan, presided at the ceremony and reviewed the history and looked ahead to the future development of the atmospheric and oceanic disciplines at the University. People who made speeches at the ceremony were, respectively, Zeng Qingcun, Su Jilan, CAE Academician Fang Guohong from the First Institute of Oceanography, CAS Academician Wang Huijun from Nanjing University of Information Science and Technology, Major General Wang Yegui of 61741 PLA troops, Dong Rong, etc. They expressed warm congratulations on the establishment of the Department.
After the ceremony, the attendees discussed issues including the development of the atmosphere and oceanic sciences, talent training, and scientific cooperation. The experts put forward valuable suggestions for and placed high hopes on the future development of the Department of Atmospheric and Ocean Sciences.
