Chen graduated from the Department of Mathematics of Fudan in February 1982 as an S.B. He studied at the Mathematics Institute of the University until August 1986, when he got his S.D. degree. Then he started teaching ay the institute. From September 1989 to September 1990, he did his postdoctoral researches at the State University of New Work at Stony Brook. From June 1997 to July 1999, he served as Vice-chair of Fudan's Mathematics Institute. From July 1999 to April 2004, he was Director of Fudan's Science & Technology Office. In April 2004, keeping his directorship, he was promoted to Assistant to the University President. Since March 2005, he has been Vice-president of Fudan University.

His researches focus on fundamental mathematics, with functional analysis in particular. He has hitherto published more than sixty papers and one monograph. In 1986 he received a Second Prize of the Education Ministry Award for Scientific & Technological Advancement. In 1997, he became one of the "Trans-century Talents" recognized by the National Education Committee. In 1998, he received a Bao Steel Education Award. In 2000, he won the Fisrt Su Bu-qing Award for Mathematics. In 2003, he received a First Prize of the Shanghai Awards for Scientific & Technological Advancement and was selected as one of the "Outstanding Leading Scholars of Shanghai". In 2004, he won a President Award of Fudan University.

He has been to the U.S. for academic communications for several times. He was a visiting professor of Vanderbilt University and of the University of Colorado at Boulder.
