Established in November 1984, Fudan's Graduate School was among the first twenty-two graduate schools after the Chinese government revived the graduate education system. Today, the Graduate School is cultivating graduate students majoring in a large variety of academic disciplines: literature, history, philosophy, law, economics, sciences, technology, medicine, management, etc.
Fudan is a university that regards learning as its essence, and therefore it lays emphasis on the education of its graduate students, who will be the cream of tomorrow. Since 1978 when the University resumed enrolling graduate students, 24,852 persons have been recruited, of whom 5,898 are doctor candidates and 18,954 are master candidates. So far at Fudan, 2,991 have obtained their doctor degrees and 12,313 have obtained their master degrees. There are more than eight thousand who are doing their graduate studies here.

Fudan's graduate education always aims at cultivating excellent graduate students. It also endeavors to create a perfect system and a fine intellectual environment to produce more and more talented people. Apart from the internships, the social practices, and the research work assigned by their departments, Fudan's graduate students take active part in many academic conferences and competitions and have won many awards. These activities actually yield valuable experience to them and offer them a stage on which to show their skills. The students are expected to be the mainstay of the University's scholarship in the foreseeable future.
