The Graduate School of Fudan University was established on November 6th, 1984 and the Graduate School of Shanghai Medical University on January 25th, 1985. Both were among the first twenty-two graduate schools after China's universities officially resumed enrolling graduate students. With the merger of Shanghai Medical University and Fudan University in April 2000, the two graduate schools were joined to be a new Graduate School of Fudan University. Therefore, a comprehensive graduate education structure is formed with disciplines in the fields of the humanities, history, philosophy, law, sciences, engineering, medicine and management.

There are eighteen schools in Fudan University. They are the schools of the Humanities, Economics, Law, Journalism, International Relations & Public Affairs, Management, Life Sciences, Technology and Engineering, Information Science and Engineering, Medicine, Pharmacy, Public Health, and Nursing, and a few independent departments such as Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Macromolecule Science, and Sociology. There are altogether with 69 disciplines, 65 institutes and 91 research centers under them, forming a comprehensive education and research system. The University confers master's degrees in two hundred and nine disciplines (with thirty-eight of them established by the University itself), and doctoral degrees in twenty-two Leve1 I and one hundred and thirty-five Level II academic disciplines (with twenty-four of them established by the University itself). Fudan is also authorized to confer such professional master degrees as MBA, MPA, Master of Law, Master of Engineering in electronic science and engineering, computer technology, material engineering and software engineering, Master of Clinic Medicine, MPH, and Doctor of Clinic Medicine. There are twenty-five research stations that offer postdoctoral fellowships, forty nationally key disciplines and five nationally key laboratories at the University.

Currently, there are 1,750 advisors for graduate students, of whom 759 are advisors for doctoral candidates, eighteen are academicians of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and six are academicians of the Chinese Academy of Engineering. The fine intellectual atmosphere, advanced research facilities and substantial academic strength are the advantageous conditions for the training of elite students.

"Every day Fudan produces a large number of learned articles that in their turn add to the University's rising academic reputation". Fudan University pays serious attention to the training of elite intellectuals ¡ª¡ª the graduate students. Since the re-establishment of graduate education in 1978, Fudan has enrolled 31,787 graduate students in all, including 7,974 doctoral candidates and 23,813 master candidates. So far 2,991 of them have obtained their doctor degrees and 12,313 have obtained their master degrees. The current graduate enrollment of Fudan University is 10,148.

Fudan's graduate education always aims at cultivating excellent graduate students. It also endeavors to create a perfect system and a fine intellectual environment to produce more and more talented people. Apart from the internships, the social practices, and the research work assigned by their departments, Fudan's graduate students take active part in many academic conferences and competitions and have won many awards. These activities actually yield valuable experience to them and offer them a stage on which to show their skills. The students are expected to be the mainstay of the University's scholarship in the foreseeable future.

The graduate students of Fudan University may apply for financial support from various sources: the awards and scholarships of more than thirty kinds with a yearly sum over 1.8 million RMB; the teaching, research and administrative assistantships funded by the University; special scholarships sponsored by the schools; subsidy funds from the government and the University; commercial education loans. Fudan University also provides its graduate students with convenient facilities and a comfortable living environment. For instance, a huge graduate dormitory community was put into use in September, 2001.

Among the scholars who obtained their doctor's or master's degrees from Fudan University, twenty-three have won national awards of "Chinese Doctors or Masters with Distinguished Contributions", and twenty-seven won prizes during the last five appraisals for the One Hundred National Outstanding Doctoral Dissertations. The graduate students of Fudan University are highly evaluated by their employers for their knowledge, creativity and practical skills.
