A Brief Manual of the Campus Network of Fudan University

This manual will help you to know more about the campus network of Fudan and thus to enjoy its services. Continually upgraded and updated, the campus network, established in 1994, is now based on the Ethernet backbone. It reaches via the kilo-mage fiber optic to the school buildings. The desks in all the students' dormitory apartments have ports connected with the switches (with hector-mega switches in the students' apartments of the South and the East Campus).

Basic hardware requirements and net configurations

To get access to the campus network, you need a computer with a network interface card (NIC), a wire and a network port. Actually network ports have already been installed in all the rooms of the students' dormitory apartments and the office buildings, and some of the rooms in the teaching buildings.

Just as every telephone has only one phone number, every computer that is used to surf on the net needs a unique network address (i.e. Internet Protocol address or IP address). Besides, the "Subnet Net Mask" and the "Gateway" should also be properly configured. All the net configuration parameters are distributed by the School Network Center. In case that you have no idea about your IP address, you may either turn to your friends who are on the net for help, or call the Network Center for consultation.

Still one more term: "Domain Name Server (DNS) Address" in the basic network configuration. It helps to realize the translation between your net domain name and your IP address. Our DNS address is 202.120.224.6, with a stand-by DNS address being 61.129.42.6. The DNS address of Fenglin Campus is 202.120.79.34 either or 202.120.79.35.

Main Network Services

1. E-mail Service
   
   Each regular student of Fudan is provided for free with an E-mail box of 10M. The address is:
   Student ID No. + @fudan.edu.cn
   The faculty may also apply to the Network Center for E-mail boxes. RMB 100 yuan will be charged for opening a new account with the capacity of 20M.
   
   There are two ways of visiting our email system. One is by the web. Just type http://mail.fudan.edu.cn at the search bar of your net browser and you find yourself in the system, where you can send, receive and manage your emails. If you are trying to visit it from outside the campus, another address may accelerate your access: http://mail.fudan.sh.cn.
   
   The other way is to use client software like Outlook and Foxmail. You have to configure some basic account parameters beforehand, including POP3 and SMTP addresses. Both the POP3 and SMTP addresses for e-mails of Fudan are mail.fudan.edu.cn. Similarly, the POP3 and SMTP addresses for out-campus visiting are mail.fudan.sh.cn. A point needs to be made clear here: ID authentication is requested by the mail server, especially in the case of configuring the client software program. Some teachers are using email services of Fenglin Campus. The email address is: user name + @shmu.edu.cn
   
   Except for the dissimilarity in the address, the email system works in the same manner as that of Handan Campus. The web mail address is http://webmail.shmu.edu.cn for on-campus visitors, and http://mail.shmu.edu.cn for visitors out of the campus network. Both the POP3 and SMTP server addresses are shmu.edu.cn.
   
   
2. Network Proxy Service
   
   Through a proxy server, network proxy can help you gain access to some network addresses that you were unable to visit. You may need our network proxy services may in the following two situations:
   
   Owing to the limitations of the Education Network, its users, excluding those in the students' apartments, can only gain access to the campus network and a limited number of the domestic websites (such as Sina and Shanghai Online). Therefore, toll network proxy service is offered to give you access to more resources online. You are enabled to utilize all the resources on the Internet with it. The service is applied for at the Network Center and charged RMB 2 yuan per megabyte.
   
   Proxy server address 1: 202.120.224.4:8080
   Proxy server address 2: 202.120.224.104:8080.
   
   Both are open to application. The proxy server address of Fenglin Campus is 202.120.79.222:80. You can inquire about your recent proxy flow at any time by visiting http://202.120.224.4. The users of Fenglin Campus proxy server can make fee inquiries at the home page of http://www.shmu.edu.cn.
   
   When attempting to search for some materials concerning your major studies through the e-book service of the University Library, you may also need to use the network proxy service. The address is 61.129.42.30:8080, which is for free. However, this proxy is limited to mere library resources. Due to the limitations of e-book copyright, some resources can only be shared online by five users at the same time.
   　
3. Fudan BBS: A Digital World for Information and Communication
   
   The BBS (Bulletin Board System), an area for releasing important information on the Internet, has now developed into a site for online communication. It includes a great variety of themes for discussion. There are chiefly two ways to enter the website of "Heavenly Luminosity" (ri yue guang hua), Fudan's BBS. The easier way is to use the ordinary web browser, that is, to enter at the IE search bar the address: http://bbs.fudan.edu.cn. The other way is to use the Telnet utility, which usually comes with the operating system. F-TERM and C-TERM are also useful tools to gain access to the BBS. The telnet address is bbs.fudan.edu.cn, using Port 23.
   　
4. Abundant FTP resources on the campus net
   
   FTP is a very important form of file sharing. With the number of the campus network users increasing rapidly and the practice of "sharing the quality resources" getting popular, personal FTP sites are literally booming on the campus. The number and types of the shared resources are beyond counting. Some warm-hearted students have developed a few FTP search engines. Just feed them with a key word or two, and you will find the resources you are looking for in an instant. The home pages of the two primary FTP searching engines are http://www.ycul.com and http://10.8.8.10.

6. The Broadcasting Station and the TV Station Based on the Campus Net
   
   These are nascent things on the campus, thanks to the super intranet and the gorgeous culture of Fudan. The webcasting station has its own yellow page to show the current broadcasting programs. Its address is http://www.ycul.com/cast or http://10.8.8.10/cast. To watch TV programs online, you can visit the Parkers' website or the home page of the University's Modern Education Technology Center.
