Professor
Gu Yudong, native of Zhangqiu, Shandong Province, graduated from
Department of Medicine, Shanghai First Medical School in 1961, and has
been working in the Faculty of Hand Surgery, Huashan Hospital attached
by the former Shanghai Medical University ever since. He took part in
the first case of toe transplantation and thumb regeneration in the
world in 1966. He summarized the vascular variations in toe and put
forward the method of two sets of blood supply system in the toe
transplantation. Owing to his idea, the rate of success of this
operation has been increased significantly. For the treatment of
brachial nerve root avulsions, he initiated phrenic nerve transfer,
contralateral C7 transfer and designed multiple neurotization.
Besides, transplantations of skin flap and nerve with blood vessel for
the management of limb injuries. In the basic studies of microsurgery,
he clarified the healing mechanism of vascular endothelial cells and
the changing pattern of smooth muscle enzymes. He was promoted to be
the professor of former Shanghai Medical School in 1986. In 1992, he
was appointed as the director of Key Laboratory of Hand Function, the
State Ministry of Health. He became a member of the Chinese Academy of
Engineering, Medical and Health Division, in 1994. In 1995, he was
appointed director of Shanghai Institute of Hand Surgery. In 1997, he
was selected chairman of Associate for Surgery of the Hand, Chinese
Medical Association. |
