  Tang Zhaoyou

Professor Tang Zhaoyou (1930-), native of Xinhui County of Guangdong Province, China, graduated from Department of Medicine in Shanghai First Medical School, in 1954. He has been lecturer and associate professor of Surgery, Former Shanghai Medical University. He was elected to be one of the first groups of academicians of the Chinese Academy of Engineering (the Division of Medicine and Health) in 1994. He is the former President of Former Shanghai Medical University and a council member of International Union Against Cancer (UICC). He has devoted himself to the research on liver cancer since 1968 and chaired the Liver Cancer Associate of Chinese Anticancer Association since 1985, and has made creative accomplishment of early detection, early diagnosis and early treatment of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). He was the first to describe the concept of "subclinical hepatocellular carcinoma", which was acknowledged as " a major progress in the understanding, and particularly the management, of hepatocellular carcinoma" by Hans Popper, the founder of contemporary hepatopathy. The theory of subclinical HCC has also been applied to "cytoreduction and sequential resection of unrespectable HCC". He chaired liver cancer sessions in the 15th and 16th International Cancer Congress in 1990 and 1994 and Shanghai International Symposium on Liver Cancer and Hepatitis in 1986,1991 and 1996. He has won the 1st and 3rd National Prize for Progress in Science and Technology and was a winner of Gold Medal awarded by Cancer Research Institute, New York, USA in 1979. His publications cover 440 papers and 4 books.
