  Wen Yumei

Professor Wen Yumei, native from Xishui County of Hubei Province, China, graduated from Shanghai First Medical School in 1956. Upon graduation, she was matriculated as a graduate student in Department of Microbiology and Immunology in Shanghai Second Medical College. In 1963-64, she was a teacher in Department of Immunology, Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences. During 1980-1982, first, she was a teacher at the WHO (World Health Organization) Viral Hepatitis Collaborating Center, in London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, UK; and later, a visiting scholar at the Hepatitis Viruses the National Institutes of Health, Bethesda, USA. She has been appointed Lecturer, associate Professor, Professor in the research section of Microbiology, Former Shanghai Medical University, and is presently Chairman and Professor of Department of Medical Molecular Virology in Former Shanghai Medical University, which is an Open Laboratory affiliated to the State Ministry of Health. She is President of the Chinese Associate for Microbiology. Professor Wen work both in teaching and research of Medical Microbiology. Her major field of research is molecular biology and immunology of hepatitis B virus. She has reported a number of hepatitis B virus variants discovered in China, and studied their biological characteristics associated with the persistent infection of hepatitis B virus in our country systemically. In 1988, she put forward immune tolerance against hepatitis B virus surface antigen and investigated treatment strategy to abrogate immune tolerance. She has designed the therapeutic vaccine of hepatitis B surface antigen-antibody compound. This novel therapeutic vaccine is currently under evaluation for clinical trials, which has been in the phase of pilotscale experiment by the producer. She has been recognized as one of the pioneers working in the field of therapeutic vaccines. Professor Wen has received nine awards and two invention patents, including the National Natural Science Award, the National Prize for Scientific and Technological Progress and the Prize for Scientific and Technological Progress by the State Ministry, Province and City. Her publications cover 6 Chinese/English books and 160 manuscripts. One of the English books, Viral Hepatitis in China: Problems and Control strategies, 1992, which was published and distributed abroad, was well received. She has instructed twelve Ph.D. students and a number of students who are now actively working in the field of microbiology and immunology. Professor Wen was elected to the Chinese Academy of Engineering in 1999.
