EYE & ENT Hospital of Fudan University Provides Medical Consultation on Ear-care Day

On March 3, 2017, the eighteenth Ear-care Day, the EYE & ENT Hospital of Fudan University (FDEENT) held a consultation themed “prevention and treatment of deafness with quality services” to raise citizens’ awareness of hearing loss prevention.

Experts from FDEENT provided consulting service to near 200 people in the two-hour event, led by Li Huawei, President of FDEENT and Head of the ENT Department. Their enthusiastic and professional services received very positive feedbacks from the public.

Li remarked, the causes of deafness are complicated. For patients suffering from severe hearing loss or neurological deafness, audiphones may not work well, and even not work at all. Cochlear implants were their only hope. However, the result of implantation could not be predicted solely by clinic experience of doctors, thus, concerted efforts of multiple disciplines are required to achieve the precise treatment of cochlear implant.

According to the WHO Report in 2013, 360 million people have hearing disability, 5.3% of the global population. The hearing impaired population in China is around 20.57 million, in which 9.49 million are old people and 0.8 million are children. Also, another 30 thousand adds to the figure every year. Promotion of deafness prevention and treatment is thus urgent in China. Experts from FDEENT are dedicated to raise public awareness of ear care and healthy lifestyles through various channels, with “early detection and diagnosis, early treatment and recovery” as their objective.
