Weekly Briefing Dec. 21-27: Year End Highlights 2019

Tick tok goes the clock. At this time of the year, the campus becomes busy as always. Well...if you are still digging into textbooks for your exams, take a break and read this special edition, so you can keep up with the latest happenings around the campus. 

This week, we are bustled with events: the return of alumni to Fudan, the Belt & Road Education Forum for International Exchange, a major provincial chronicle checking into Fudan Library, the unveiling of an international journal editorial department and a special ceremony for the soon retired Fudan faculty members, etc.



Welcome home!


On December 21, Fudan University welcomed back 3 groups of alumni. 

For the graduates and current students of the Fudan Department of World Economics, the day marks the 40th birthday of their beloved Department. With such deep affection, they sang Fudan University Anthem together, expressing their best birthday blessings to the Department. The current students performed songs including We are the World, Tomorrow will be Better and My country and I.

The cheerful singing voice was also heard at another reunion. The 2019 annual gathering of Shanghai Xinguanghua Technology Service Corporation & 35th founding anniversary of its predecessor, the Student Consulting Technology Development Center at Fudan University, was held on Dec. 21. 

Shanghai Xinguanghua Technology Service Corporation is a student organization born in Fudan University devoted to work-study programs. Pan Haobo, the first General Manager of the Corporation, Min Hao, the second Deputy Manager of the Corporation, and alumnus Shao Lv who once worked there shared their experience with the students present. All attendees sang Fudan University Anthem at the reunion. 

Law School alumni have also returned home. At the alumni forum, rountables were held for the alumni to communicate with professors. At the 2nd Board Meeting of Law School, the alumni also sang Fudan University Anthem at the gathering to convey their gratitude to the alma mater. The honorable titles of “Outstanding Alumni”, “Excellent Alumni Cohort” and “Contributor to Alumni Relations” were presented.


A series of high-end events you need to know


On December 21, the Belt & Road Education Forum for International Exchange was held. Zhao Lingshan, Vice President and Secretary General of China Education Association for International Exchange, and Chen Zhimin, Vice President of Fudan University, attended the forum and delivered remarks.


On December 22, the Belt & Road Education Committee of China Education Association for International Exchange was founded. Jiao Yang, Vice President of China Education Association for International Exchange and Chairperson of Fudan University Council, Zhu Chongshi, Vice President of China Education Association for International Exchange, former President of Xiamen University, Zhao Lingshan, Vice President and Secretary General of China Education Association for International Exchange, and Chen Zhimin, Director of the 1st Council of the Belt & Road Education Committee and Vice President of Fudan University, together announced the launch of the Committee.


On December 22, the 2019 annual conference of the China University Think Tank Forum, themed “Governance in China: the World in the Next Decade—Implementing the Spirit of the 4th Plenary Session of the 19th CPC Central Committee”. The conference was attended by more than 100 officials from the central and local governments, as well as experts and scholars from various think tanks. The China University Think Tank Forum has successfully held for six consecutive years, calling on nationwide university-level think tanks to serve for national strategies, enhancing coordination and opening up, and making China's voice heard. Jiao Yang, Chairperson of Fudan University Council, Zhang Zheng, Editor-in-chief of Guangming Daily, and Tan FangZheng, Deputy Director of the Department of Social science and Technology of the Ministry of Education, attended the plenary meeting and delivered speeches.


On December 26, with the theme of “High-quality Co-construction of the ‘Belt and Road’: Direction and Path”, the Belt and Road High-end Think Tank Forum and 5th meeting of the Think Tank Cooperation Alliance was held in Beijing. This year, the meeting selected 10 winners of “Research Contribution Award” and “Quality Event Award” respectively. Fudan Institute of Belt and Road & Global Governance won the “Quality Event Award”.


New arrivals at FDU Library


The donation ceremony of A Chronicle of Jiangsu Province was held at Fudan University Library on December 25. As a major cultural project that inherits and protects the outstanding cultural and historical heritage of Jiangsu province, the Chronicle contains about 600 types of old local chronicles at all administrative levels in Jiangsu. It systematically describes the environment, politics, economics, culture and society in various areas in Jiangsu at different periods before 1949, which serves as precious source of geographical information and cultural heritage.


Editorial department of a new international journal unveiled


On December 24, the editorial department at Fudan University of the International Journal of Extreme Manufacturing (IJEM) was unveiled. IJEM, co-sponsored by the China Academy of Engineering Physics, Dalian University of Technology and Fudan University, will be issued worldwide by the Institute of Physics Publishing (IOP).


Faculty members retiring from work


On December 27, a ceremony dedicated to teachers retiring from work was held in Fudan. This year, a total of 126 faculty members have retired from Fudan. 78 of them have worked in Fudan for more than 30 years, and 52 have never left Fudan since they joined the faculty. 

At the ceremony, the university chiefs presented commemorative medals and bouquets to the faculty representatives. An exquisite handwritten book with the names of this year’s retired teachers, made by Fudan Calligraphy and Chinese Painting Association, was gifted by the Department of Human Resources to the Department of Retired Faculty Affairs. And teachers present also wrote down their blessings to Fudan.
