Eating Well on Campus | North Canteen

Covering an area of 12,576 square meters, the renovated North Canteen has made an amazing debut this semester. The fusion canteen offers both Chinese and foreign cuisines, appealing to various taste buds.

Aside from dining, the North Canteen also provides multifunctional facilities, including soundproof capsule studies, writing whiteboards, glass projection screen etc., for study, gatherings, group discussions, panel meeting and club activities, which give the students more space to hold various activities.

Wonder what are the best-selling dishes in the canteen? Take a glance!

1.Regular Dish

Average price per person: RMB 10

At the regular dish counter, you can choose from a menu of over 20 Chinese dishes.

2.Spicy Pot

Average price per person: RMB 20

Spicy pot is a dish developed from traditional hot pot. As the soup-free version of hotpot, you simply choose the meat and vegetables that you would like to have in your hot pot. Spices and herbs, as the central ingredients, give the dry pot a savory aroma. Although the counter offers a chilli-free version, we strongly recommend you to try the authentic Sichuan/Chongqing-style spicy pot.

3.Xiao Long Bao

Average price per dish: RMB 9

Xiao Long Bao, also known as “soup dumpling”, is famous for its delicate skin and meat broth inside. The most common stuffing is made with pork. We recommend vinegar to go with the meat broth and stuffing. Feel free to fetch a dipping plate at the counter.

4.Cantonese Barbecued Pork Belly

5.Beijing Roast Duck

Average price per set: RMB 28

As one of the most well-known traditional Chinese dishes, Beijing roast duck needs no introduction. No one can resist the perfect combination of crispy duck skin, tender duck meat, juicy cucumber, savory spring onion, sweet bean sauce and soft pancakes. Since the dish is always sold out quickly, you will need to come and place an order before the lunch rush.

Remember what we’ve shared above is only a tiny portion of what the North Canteen offers. At Fudan University, you will have so many different dishes to try out.

According to our interview, the top 3 reasons why students like about the environment of the North Canteen are:

1.Comfy and convenient

The canteen is now equipped with high-quality furniture, such as cozy tables and chairs, and easy-to-reach elevators. Trees, creating a fresh and natural atmosphere for relaxation, are planted both inside and outside the canteen.

2.Tidy and bright

Thanks to the glass roof, you can enjoy plenty of sunshine at the canteen. Cleaning staff come to clean the tables immediately after students finish their meals, and the intelligent recycling system shall turn the kitchen waste into carbon dioxide and water by degrading the microbes in the food waste.

3.Charming outdoor scenery

There is a small lotus lake with an elegant bridge in front of the canteen. If you are already pleased with this scenery, wait to be wowed in the evening when lights are on.

Other facilities preferred by Fudan students and staff:

1.Study Spaces

This is a brand-new feature in the North Canteen: a variety of places for both self-study and group study. Noise-free capsule studies and meeting rooms with WiFi, charging station, writing whiteboard, glass projection screen and smart TV are available. You can stay there from day to night, but don’t forget to reserve online first.

2.Beverage Shop

On the second floor, we have a beverage shop where you can enjoy a wide variety of tasty drinks at a fair price. Drinks are all hand-made on the spot so you can get fresh drinks: black sugar bubble milk tea, fruit milkshake, honey peach soda, yogurt...

3.Hand-washing Area

Due to COVID-19, the university is taking actions to ensure a healthier and more hygienic environment at the canteen. The North Canteen has set up a hand-washing area. You can use hand dryers, alcohol disinfectant and liquid soaps there. Please wash your hands thoroughly before and after meals.
