2021 China-Korea LEADership Exchange Program held

The 2021 China-Korea LEADership Exchange Program, co-hosted by Korea Foundation for Advanced Studies and Fudan University and organized by Fudan Development Institute, was successfully held from July 5 to 11. 


Due to the global pandemic, cross-border exchanges are facing unprecedented challenges. This year’s program is an innovative combination of online and offline platforms, in which 20 outstanding university students from Fudan University and Peking University were invited to participate in the program together with 20 outstanding students from Seoul National University, Korea University, Yonsei University and other universities in Korea. Instead of gathering in one place, the participants stayed in Shanghai and Seoul respectively and joined the sessions initiated by the other side online. The four main themes of “Learning”, “Experience”, “Argumentation” and “Discovery” were used to promote in-depth communication and mutual understanding through lectures, group projects, online games and other activities.


As of 2020, a cumulative total of 556 Chinese and Korean students have participated in the program. To commemorate the 20th anniversary of the normalization of diplomatic relations between China and Korea, the China-Korea LEADership Exchange Summer Program was launched in 2012 to promote understanding and friendship between students from the two countries.


Renowned scholars and experts delivered speeches to shared their insights on global trends.


“Global Finance 2021: Risks, Opportunities, the Known and the Unknown” by Qian Jun, professor of finance and Executive Dean of Fan Hai International School of Finance, Fudan University


“Leadership and Imagination”by Yeom Jaeho, the 19th President of and professor emeritus of public administration at Korea University


“Economic Statecraft” by Zhang Xiaotong, professor at the Institute for Belt and Road Initiative and Global Governance at Fudan University.


“The Politics of Sustainability in Global Health” by Eibind Engebretsen, professor of interdisciplinary health science at the Institute of Health and Society (HELSAM) at the University of Oslo, Norway.


“Generation MZ and the Future of Asia” by Mo Jongryn, professor of international political economy at Yonsei University


“AliResearch in the New Era of Digital Economy” by Wang Lan, senior researcher of cross-border trade at AliResearch


“Electronics 101: Challenges and Opportunities” by Han Jaeduk, assistant professor of electronic engineering at Hanyang University


The program also innovates the way of communication and experience for students. Former participants were invited to share their experience, and various fun games were introduced to help the young participants approach each other.


Kim Jimok, a program alumnus and now serves as account manager of Google Korea, shared his latest songwriting works.


Jeon Sumin, a program alumnus and currently works as HYBE Corporate Social Responsibility Manager, introduced recent progress of modern corporates’ social responsibility fulfillment.


Dr. Jin Shengming resident of Department of Surgery at Fudan University Shanghai Cancer Center, also a program alumnus , presented the technology advances in human disease treatment.


Dr. Shen Jiao from Shanghai Jiao Tong University, a program alumnus, delivered a speech titled “Two Models of Career Path”.



The 40 Chinese and South Korean students formed eight groups to conduct research on eight topics: politicization of the semiconductor industry, new energy vehicles, de-nuclearization of North Korea, transmission of COVID-19, ethics of science and technology, digital RMB, “involution” in society and the culture of filial piety.


Pan Tianshu, professor of cultural anthropology at School of Social Development and Public Policy, Fudan University; Liu Hong, associate professor of education at Fudan Development Institute; Lee Geunwook, professor of political science at Sogang University; and Kim Yunjin, assistant professor of international business at Sogang University instructed on group research online.
