“Line 18 can greatly shorten the commute,” said Duan Xuchang, a medical student living at Fudan’s Fenglin Campus, who once had to take a long walk after getting off at Jiangwan Stadium Station or Guoquan Road station of Metro Line 10 to arrive at Fudan’s Handan Campus.
Now, Fudaners and visitors to Fudan University have a new transportation option, as the northern section of Metro Line 18’s Phase 1, running through Baoshan and Yangpu districts and the Pudong New Area, was officially launched on December 30.
As one of the 26 stations of Line 18, Fudan University Station is only 200 meters away from the No.3 Southeast Gate of Handan Campus. The eight stations in the south – from Yuqiao Station to Hangtou Station – have been open since last year.

Fudan University Station is decorated with elements unique to Fudan. The red and grey colors match the appearance of Xianghui Theatre.
You can see on the wall the famous line “Brilliant are the sunshine and moonlight, again the morning radiance returns at dawn (日月光华，旦复旦兮)” from which the name Fu Dan (复旦) was inspired, as well as the motto of the university “Rich in Knowledge and Tenacious of Purposes, Inquiring with Earnestness and Reflecting with Self-Practice (博学而笃志，切问而近思).”
On the walls at both ends of the station platform is the original blueprint of Fudan's dorms designed by architect Henry Murphy, who was invited by Li Denghui, then president of Fudan University, to design the campus for the university in 1920. It also serves as the reference for the design of buildings around the old university gate today.
With exposed pipes and wire at the ceilings, all the stations of Metro Line 18’s Phase 1 are decorated in a unified industrial style. Since drop ceilings are abandoned, the floor heights of the stations have been increased to make them more spacious. Inside the carriages, the seats with wood patterns are beautiful and comfortable.
Each carriage is equipped with wireless chargers for mobile phones. There is also a USB charging port for mobiles without wireless charging function.
The driverless line also offers multiple choices for interchange. Passengers can interchange to 12 lines at 9 stations in the northern section of Metro Line 18’s Phase 1.
