VR enables experiment classes under closed-loop management


Virtual reality has been applied for experiment classes in Fudan under the closed-loop management recently. Students can wear VR devices to do virtual experiments in an immersive way.



On the “Virtual Laboratory for Detection and Measurement of Ionizing Radiation” platform, doing experiments is like "playing online games". Students can select a character, control the movement of the character with keyboard, and click the mouse to operate equipment.


"I feel like as if I was in a real lab and I'm doing experiments step by step. It's fun! We are able to avoid dangers in a real lab because we are not directly exposed to radioactive sources, but if we do it wrong, my character will ‘lose blood’, which reminds me to be very careful when conducting experiments," said Li Yuan, a student from Department of Nuclear Science and Technology.


The VR experiment system was developed by the research team led by Yang Yang, associate professor at the Department of Nuclear Science and Technology. The team put forward this idea in 2018, and completed the initial project in more than one year. In 2021, the whole virtual laboratory was "moved" to Fudan University iLab virtual simulation experiment teaching platform, and it is open to all students.



"During the pandemic, online platforms have become even more important." Yang Yang said that he chose to stay on campus during the closed-loop management, instructing students to do research during the day and sleeping in his office at night. "It is better to be on site when instructing students to write papers and ensure the safety of laboratory work."



On the iLab online platform, a total of 20 experiments of liberal arts, science, medicine and engineering are open for all students in Fudan. Students can enjoy immersive learning with their own computers.


Click on one piece of work of art, and students can enter a new world of light and shadow, and experience various art scenes with the help of iLab.


"It's totally different from the traditional way of teaching," explained Zhao Yang, a teacher at the Art and Education Center. "Art is dynamic, the platform is not just an imitation of the original work, but also takes into account the message of the original work itself in the interactive design."


"I love the use of the graceful Klein Blue. Mr. Zhao demonstrated the operation of the platform to us, and the dynamic process of Apollo being dyed blue touched me," said Wang Xiaotian, a student from School of Economics.


3D specimens of gastric ulcer


School of Basic Medical Sciences has also created a batch of digital dissections and 3D human biospecimens. Students can have immersive learning and observe the details in the digital dissections and 3D human biospecimens via iLab, different from a traditional lab enironment where specimens need to be viewed under a microscope.
