On the afternoon of April 30, a group of international exchange students and teachers from the Culture and Health course in the Department of Sociology at Fudan University's School of Social Development and Public Policy visited the No. 600 Gallery, located within the Shanghai Mental Health Center, to collectively experience the Tiny Emotion Universe—Adolescent Pan-Emotion Art Exhibition. This field trip aimed to expand students' understanding of adolescent mental health, social emotional expression, and medical humanities through an immersive art experience.
Since its establishment in 2019, the No. 600 Gallery has been dedicated to using art as a medium to integrate popular science and humanities, making it the first art space in a psychiatric hospital on the Chinese mainland. Focusing on the theme of emotions, the exhibition featured several emotional themes such as happiness, anger and disgust, anxiety, depression, loneliness and dependence, fear, and inferiority and jealousy. The exhibits were collaboratively created by artists and students from Shanghai Xianwei Yu Middle School, vividly and authentically depicting the rich and complex emotional world of adolescents.
Led by the curator, the group toured the various themed exhibition areas, not only feeling the emotional intensity conveyed by the artworks but also gaining a deeper understanding of the psychological challenges faced by adolescents during their growth. After the exhibition, the students and teachers engaged in a lively discussion and exchange on emotional art expression and social mental health, with an active atmosphere and frequent intellectual collisions.
This field trip is an essential part of the Culture and Health course, which aims to explore the sociological dimensions of medical and health issues from a cross-cultural perspective. Through in-depth interaction with local medical institutions and on-site teaching, the course further enhances international students' perception and understanding of China's social medical practices and their cultural context.
In the future, the school will continue to expand the forms of course teaching, link more social resources, and provide international students with richer and more diverse learning experiences, practicing the student-centered and knowledge-action integrated teaching philosophy.
