Fudan leads National Center for Applied Mathematics of Shanghai

The National Center for Applied Mathematics of Shanghai will be led by Fudan University, co-run with Shanghai Jiao Tong University (SJTU), and joined by other universities and enterprises in the Yangtze River delta.

The Ministry of Science and Technology of China has recently announced 13 National Centers for Applied Mathematics in 13 municipalities and provinces.

The National Center of Shanghai aims to gather disciplinary strengths of universities and research institutes in the Yangtze River Delta, tapping the potential of applied mathematics in multiple industries. It will serve as a dialogue platform on cross-disciplinary innovation for mathematicians, entrepreneurs and researchers, while leveraging Shanghai’s advantages in large-scale integrated circuit, civil aviation, information technology, artificial intelligence, finance, biomedicine and big data, etc.

Shanghai Center for Mathematical Sciences (SCMS) affiliated to Fudan University

Specifically, the Shanghai Center for Mathematical Sciences (SCMS) affiliated to Fudan University, will be leading the National Center of Shanghai. Proposed by the late Academician Gu Chaohao, SCMS was founded in 2012 on funds from China central government, Shanghai government and Fudan University. It has since been offering mathematical expertise to solve knotty problems of other disciplines.

Now leading the National Center of Shanghai, Fudan is ready to input its strengths in mathematics, artificial intelligence, big data and microelectronics to help lift some of the heaviest bars hindering the development of certain industries. So far, Fudan has co-held three seminars on applied mathematics with China’s leading enterprises and research institutes, including Empyrean Software, Huawei HiSilicon, Shanghai IC R&D Center and National High-Performance IC Design Center (Shanghai) to identify core mathematical issues in electronic design automation and exchange views on the future of China’s integrated circuit industry.

Amid the ongoing COVID-19 outbreak, Fudan mathematicians are working on predictive modeling of virus transmission to facilitate public health monitoring in Shanghai and the rest of China.

The establishment of the National Center for Applied Mathematics of Shanghai will help researchers at Fudan and across Shanghai overcome disciplinary boundaries through interdisciplinary collaboration.
