President Xi replies to Fudan volunteers at Museum of The Communist Manifesto

By Yan Chengyi

Chinese President Xi Jinping sends letter to wish the musuem docents to follow the spirit of Chen Wangdao, Fudan University president between 1952-1966 and the first translator of the full text of The Communist Manifesto into Chinese.

China Central Television (CCTV) reports on President Xi’s letter on the evening of June 30.

In his letter, President Xi Jinping acknowledged Chen Wangdao’s great contribution to the country. “Only with a firm belief can one go far,” he wrote, encouraging the Fudan volunteers to work hard and strive for the rejuvenation of the Chinese nation.

“You are doing an important thing by explaining to visitors how your former president Chen Wangdao helped spread Marxism,” wrote President Xi.

“I hope you can persist in what you are doing and do it even better,” President Xi gave his expectation.

The Museum of The Communist Manifesto, where about 400 exhibits related to Chen and The Communist Manifesto are on display, is a three-storey house at 51 Guofu Road near Handan Campus of Fudan University. Chen was President of Fudan University between 1952 and 1966 and lived in the house from 1956 until he passed away in 1977.

The museum is now maintained by Fudan University as an off-campus museum of university history. The volunteers at the museum, composed of students and staff of Fudan University, while taking care of the former residence of the former head of the university, inspire visitors with Chen’s life achievements crowned by his translation of The Communist Manifesto.

The Communist Manifesto is one of the world’s most influential political documents written by German philosophers Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels in 1848. The publication of Chen’s translation facilitated the wide dissemination of Marxism across China. His translation motivated generations of men and women in China to devote themselves to national liberation and rejuvenation.
