By

Starry Plan, a summer internship program aimed at helping Taiwan students explore their career paths in Shanghai, wrapped up in Fudan Science Park on October 17.

As a platform forged by Fudan University for university-industry collaboration, Starry Plan is expected to help Taiwan students adapt to their life in Shanghai and achieve better career development. A series of events have thus been designed. Participants of the program can take summer internships in well-known enterprises in the city, while paying visits to enterprises to gain a better understanding of the latest developments in Chinese mainland. Besides, they can also take the weekend courses on career development offered by professionals to acquire frontier knowledge of different sectors, financial expertise and skills for CV writing and interviews, which would enhance the necessary abilities for students to lay a solid foundation in their future career and deepen their sense of involvement in Shanghai’s development. The organizer of Starry Plan is also preparing other sessions to boost participants’ skills and knowledge required for starting a business and getting employed in Chinese mainland following the wrap-up of the program.

Starry Plan has received positive feedback from both participants and enterprises. Over one hundred students applied for the program, with 40 participants offered internships in 17 renowned enterprises. Among the 40 participants, there are 2 students who have obtained full-time job offers from the internship providers.

According to the organizer, most applicants for this year’s program came from well-known universities in China, including Peking University, Fudan University, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Tongji University, East China Normal University, Nanjing University, Wuhan University, Sun Yat-sen University and Shanghai University of Finance and Economics.

Zhong Xiaomin, director of the Taiwan Affairs Office of Shanghai Municipal People’s Government, congratulated the students on their achievements and thanked Fudan University for its effort in organizing this program. She pointed out that people on both sides of the Taiwan Strait are part of one big family, and it requires the youth of the two sides to join hands and forge ahead in unity to realize China’s rejuvenation. She said young people from Taiwan should always bear the country and the world in mind, setting up personal values and ideals that serve the needs of national development and making steady progress with firm conviction and a strong sense of responsibility. She stressed that Shanghai has introduced 55 measures to promote equal treatment of Taiwan compatriots in Shanghai. The government is committed to providing Taiwan compatriots with a good environment for living, learning, entrepreneurship and employment, as well as a platform for the growth of young people from Taiwan.

Chen Zhimin, vice president of Fudan University, expressed gratitude to the representatives from all sectors for their support for this program and Fudan University. He said the internship program plays a significant role in fostering the growth of young people and development of universities, and boosting social progress and mutual development of young people across the Straits. Young students could deepen their understanding of the society and enhance their abilities through real job training. Meanwhile, the universities have for the first time managed to combine resources from different sectors, including local authorities, universities, communities and enterprises, helping outstanding Taiwan students in Shanghai grow into pillars of the society. Serving as a bridge for cross-Straits youth exchanges, Starry Plan is expected to be joined by more Taiwan students, laying a solid foundation for Taiwan students coming to Shanghai for internship in the post-epidemic era.

Ye Yuhao, student from Taipei University of Technology, has been offered a full-time job in this program, and he has also made many friends his own age, from whom he gradually learned about the abundant job opportunities in Chinese mainland, which are brought by its rapid development. “Under the guidance of the teachers and the support of other participants, I never felt alone in job-seeking. I managed to adjust my mindset and finally got a desirable job and seized the opportunity to study and work in Chinese mainland,” said Ye.

“I think Fudan serves as platform helping Taiwan students adapt to their life in Shanghai and further their studies here. We have also gained valuable study opportunities, different platforms for exchanges and ample room for development, with the help of Shanghai municipality and the enterprises,” said Zhuang Qi, student from Fudan University, who’s striving to achieve long-term personal development in Shanghai and contribute to the development of the country.

Shen Guolin, director of the Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan Affairs Office of Fudan University, made a concluding remark to the program. The wrap-up ceremony was also joined by Shi Dengding, vice President of Shanghai Federation of Industry and Commerce, Yang Lihua, deputy director of the Taiwan Affairs Office of Shanghai Municipal People’s Government and other guests from government agencies, universities and enterprises.
