Jiao Yang

Chair of Fudan University Council Jiao Yang extended welcome to Lui and his delegation for their visit. She said China and Singapore are close partners with geographical proximity and cultural affinity, boasting frequent and unimpeded high-level exchanges and fruitful economic and trade cooperation. In the face of COVID-19, the two countries have been helping each other and maintaining frequent exchanges. We share the same vision of upholding multilateralism and promoting common development. It is hoped that the two sides will strengthen exchanges for economic, scientific, social and cultural development and jointly contribute to the prosperity of Asia and the world at large.

Jiao Yang pointed out Fudan University has built good relationships with the National University of Singapore, Nanyang Technological University, Singapore Management University, etc., in areas such as student and faculty exchanges. She looks forward to the deepening of the inter-university ties with Singaporean universities so that Fudan can learn more from Singapore’s best practices of campus management. She hopes the two sides can step up cooperation in scientific and technological innovation in different fields, especially in Fudan’s strongest disciplines such as public health. She said that cultural exchanges are an important basis for all forms of cooperation, and Fudan will promote international internship programs for youth between the two countries, broaden students’ international horizons, and strengthen cultural exchanges and common development of the two countries.

Lui Tuck Yew

Lui said Fudan University has attached great importance to political exchanges and university exchanges between the two countries. The bilateral political and economic and trade cooperation between China and Singapore has continued to deepen. Through Suzhou Industrial Park, Sino-Singapore Eco-City and the China-Singapore (Chongqing) Demonstration Initiative on Strategic Connectivity, Singapore’s understanding of China’s development strategies has been constantly growing. Singapore has been proactive in exploring new ways of cooperation in different areas and boosting people-to-people exchanges and university exchanges between the two countries. Although some of the programs have been put on hold due to the pandemic, it is hoped that these programs can resume as soon as possible after the pandemic ends.

Speaking of the MoU on implementing the youth interns exchange scheme recently signed by Chinese and Singaporean governments, Lui said Singapore will send outstanding students to China’s prominent enterprises for 6-month internships, allowing them to have a better understanding of China and its rapid growth and promoting an upgrade in cooperation between the two countries in the future. Singaporean students can also apply for study programs at top Chinese universities, he added. Lui said, Singapore welcomes Chinese young people to visit Singapore either for internship or study so as to further understand the society of Singapore.
