International volunteers shine on Fudan campus

By

On March 3, this year’s volunteer day event was held in front of the Northern Canteen on Handan Campus. Through the crowd one can see them, in red jackets with the logo “Fudan International Volunteer” on the back, giving out flyers and enthusiastically introducing visitors to the Fudan International Volunteer Service Team.

Established during the COVID-19 pandemic, the core purpose of the Fudan International Volunteer Service Team is to build cohesion among international students and make their life more convenient.

Lots of services have been offered by its members since, and even before the establishment of the team. Wu Yanni, a graduate student from Venezuela studying linguistics, has been taking part in volunteer work since the beginning of the pandemic. During the closed-loop management period last Spring semester, she helped carry out routine PCR tests, distributed daily supplies and disinfected public areas within the international student dormitories.

Franci, a PhD candidate from Iceland in International Relations, is another backbone member of the volunteer team. According to her, the volunteer team serves well as a bridge between students and the university administration. Ranging from paperwork assistance to bank accounts application and dormitory safety orientation, its services cover almost every little aspect of campus life. “Basically, our mission is to offer help when an international student needs it,” she said.

Nonetheless, the members aim higher. According to a staffer from the International Student Office, the team will expand the range of existing volunteer activities by both looking into the needs and tapping the talents of the international students. Also, the team is taking into consideration deeper collaborations with other student societies and schools and departments of the university. The higher purpose of this volunteer team is to “enrich the international students’ stay here at Fudan by better integrating them into the Chinese society and culture”.

The team was more than glad to see that the recruitment campaign attracted numerous new members. Among the new recruits is Filip, a freshman graduate student from Croatia major in finance. He’s no freshman in volunteer work though. Years of experience working for the Red Cross and Student Union in Croatia led to his decision without hesitation to sign up. “I would like to do something on top of study during my stay here.” He believes this experience will give him a better knowledge of what’s happening in the university and also make him more acquainted with the local culture.

Volunteerism means more than volunteer work. It is not just what people do, but also how people live. People may speak different languages and grow up in different cultures, but there is something universal, something people can always count on. That’s the humanity’s common values in kindness, mutual understanding and  sacrifice. Let’s wish the Fudan International Volunteer Team and its members a splendid future.
