Move-in Day: Welcome aboard, incoming Fudaners!

Fudan welcomed more than 4,200 freshmen and 11,000 incoming postgraduate students from all over the world last weekend, marking the beginning of the brand-new fall semester of 2023.

This year, nearly 700 international students from over 76 countries have become new members of Fudan community.

“I’m interested in Chinese culture. I hope to learn Chinese history and Chinese culture while studying philosophy at Fudan University,” said Darwin John Vickers, who is going to study philosophy as an undergraduate student at Fudan.

“Fudan is a very nice university to study, and I also wanted to live in Shanghai, because Shanghai seems like a very interesting city to live in,” he said.

Yelizaveta Konrat, a Kazakhstani undergraduate student, arrived two days before the move-in day. “Fudan is so beautiful, and the campuses are very large, ” said Yelizaveta, who chooses biology as her major, thinking of biology as part of people’s life, “I hope I can learn more about biology at Fudan University. ”

As a sports lover, Yelizaveta is also looking forward to participating in Fudan’s various extracurricular activities and experiencing the campus life here.

Upon arrival to campus, freshmen were greeted by student volunteers and staff dressed in college gear, ready to help remove items for the students.

Various welcome gifts including folding fans, practical handbooks, night lights etc. were offered to the freshmen, helping them adjust to campus life and learn more about the university.

On August 26, one day before the move-in day for the freshmen, more than 11,000 incoming postgraduate students got registered at Fudan’s Handan, Fenglin, Jiangwan and Zhangjiang campuses.

Rita Peignien, a student pursing a dual master degree in Europe and Asia in International Affairs at the School of International Relations and Public Affairs, comes from Aix-en-Provence, a city in the south of France. She spent her first year of postgraduate study in Sciences Po, where she took many classes on laws and economy.

It is actually her first time coming to China. “Fudan’s campus is lively and beautiful, and dorm amenities are comfortable and convenient,” Rita said. She hopes to improve her Chinese proficiency and better understand Chinese culture and history.

Over the past weekend, the canteens, cafeterias and bakeries on the four campuses of Fudan offered special meal deals for incoming students. 4053 such meal sets were sold during lunchtime on the first day. More than 300 new dishes were added to menus across the four campuses. Various kinds of service were also provided by volunteers on the four campuses.

A bilingual guide has been distributed to every international freshmen. The brochure was co-edited and translated by the students of the Fudan International Student Volunteer Team during the summer vacation, aiming to help international students settle down in Fudan University and understand China and Shanghai better.
