International faculty celebrate Teachers' Day at Fudan

By

Today (September 10) marks China's 39th Teachers' Day. At Fudan, an international community both for students and faculty members, faculty members from different countries have also received heartfelt respect and thanks from their students for their extraordinary patience and effort towards students. Let's check out how Fudan's international faculty members are celebrating Teachers' Day this year and what are they like in the eyes of the students.

Prof. Harder with her students.

Last Friday, Prof. Marie Harder, who works in the Department of Environmental Science & Engineering of Fudan University, opened the door to her office and widened her eyes at what she saw. Surrounded by artfully arranged flowers and creamy cakes, she suddenly realized something and exclaimed, “It's the time of the year!”

Harder is mostly known by Fudaners for her contribution to the city's waste sorting campaign. A lot of Harder's research is rooted in residential communities in China, but also the UK, Canada and African countries such as Botswana and Senegal. She now leads a diverse research team with members from China, India, Nigeria and Cameroon.

“Prof. Harder's passion for scientific work has not only deepened my understanding but also inspired me to pursue my goals with the same passion,” said Wu Wenhao, a 4th-year doctoral student.

Shehanas Pazhoor from India, Harder's 3rd-year doctoral student, said Harder is the one of the most inspiring people she has met in life. “She taught us the importance of being happy at what we are doing and balancing our personal and professional lives.”

Benita C. Odii from Nigeria, a post-doctoral fellow on Harder’s team, said, “I am grateful for Prof. Harder's patience and time investments, for looking out for the best in us, and for desiring the good and seeking for us to have a place in society.”

Prof. Bambi with his students.

Yesterday, one day before the Teachers' Day, Cosimo Bambi, Xie Xide Junior Professor at Department of Physics, received bouquets from his students.

In 2012, Bambi joined Fudan University. With research interest in fields ranging from strong field tests of general relativity to black holes and X-ray astronomy, the Italian professor has more than 150 publications, many of which are highly cited.

Over the past 11 years, Bambi has also established Fudan’s first team dedicated to the research of high-energy astrophysics and black holes, which has fostered many excellent students in this field and also attracted students from different countries to join the team.

On behalf Department of Physics, Zhou Lei(3rd from the left), dean of Department of Physics, presented a bouquet to Prof. Bambi days before the Teachers' Day.

“Prof. Bambi always allows us the freedom of research, and encourages us to try something new. I'm grateful to have such a supervisor,” said Liu Honghui, a doctoral student on Bambi's team. He became Bambi's student 6 years ago, and Bambi's devotion to research has impressed him a lot, “Sometimes, we may send him emails late at night, but he always replies us very soon.”

Prof. Aidekon with his students.

Elie Francis Aidekon, a professor of mathematics at Fudan University, had a dinner tonight with his students to celebrate this Teachers' Day.

Aidekon joined Fudan two years ago. His research area involves probability and stochastic processes, and some of his research works have been published in leading journals including Annals of Probability and Probability Theory and Related Fields. He earned his doctoral degree at Sorbonne Université and he was a junior member at the Institute Universitaire de France.

As a teacher at Fudan now, Aidekon finds the students here are committed, motivated and talented. He thinks the university provides him with ideal working conditions, and he enjoys collaborating with his students on new topics.

“Prof. Aidekon is so kind that he's always willing to listen to what we say and help us make plans for what literature works we should read according to our research interests,” said Yu Yaolin, a doctoral student of Aidekon’s, who is grateful for Aidekon’s guidance and hopes everything goes well with his work at Fudan.
