Vice-Chancellor of the University of Auckland visits Fudan

By

President of Fudan University Jin Li met with Dawn Freshwater, vice-chancellor of the University of Auckland, on Fudan’s Handan campus on September 12. The two sides exchanged views on further deepening the cooperation and broadening the areas of collaboration.

Dawn Freshwater said she was delighted to visit Fudan University again. The University of Auckland and Fudan University have maintained close ties over the past years, with the Confucius Institute in Auckland jointly established by the two sides, a shining example of the relationship. In recent years, the University of Auckland has made full use of artificial intelligence, computer-assisted learning and other technologies in medicine, life science and many other research fields, especially in the development and innovation of precision medicine. It is expected that the two sides will continue to deepen and expand areas of cooperation, building on existing collaborations, and promoting dialogue between faculty members and students at Auckland and Fudan through various joint training and exchange programs, especially in the fields of computer science, data science and public health. Professor Freshwater also hoped the two universities could join hands for the transformation of scientific achievements and the world’s sustainable development.

The University of Auckland has long been an important partner for Fudan University, said Jin. The jointly-established Confucius Institute in Auckland has provided a platform for cultural exchange and Chinese language education in both China and New Zealand. Collaborative efforts in the field of obstetrics and gyneology have also yielded remarkable research outcomes. As a university that places emphasis on social responsibility and sustainable development, Fudan has published a large number of academic papers and research reports related to the SDGs over the past 5 years, offering solutions for global sustainable development. The International Centre of Excellence on Integrated Research on Disaster Risk (IRDR) at Fudan University focuses on the inter-connectivity between climate change, atmospheric environment and personal health, while the initiative of Human Phenome Project is making efforts to promote human health and well-being. In recent years, Fudan has been committed to the exploration of AI for Science. The largest cloud-based AI computing platform in Chinese universities CFFF was launched in Fudan last June, catering to various research and application needs. These platforms will provide additional opportunities for future collaboration between the two universities.

Sebastian Link, associate dean of Faculty of Science, the University of Auckland and other representatives of both sides attended the meeting.
