The forerunner of Fudan University’s medical school was Shanghai Medical University, China’s first state-run medical school. Shanghai Medical University had an exceptional academic tradition and excellent history, bringing about many firsts in the history of medicine in China. After Fudan University and Shanghai Medical University were combined in 2000, the school made development of medical studies into an important part of its strategy for becoming a world-class university. Over the past decade, the school has made an effort to conform to the norms of modern medicine, and has actively explored running a medical school within a comprehensive university, with important work in promoting all branches of basic and clinical medicine, as well as collaboration between medicine and other areas of study, with positive results.
