The forerunner of Fudan University’s medical school was Shanghai Medical University, China’s first state-run medical school. Shanghai Medical University had an exceptional academic tradition and excellent history, bringing about many firsts in the history of medicine in China. After Fudan University and Shanghai Medical University were combined in 2000, the school made development of medical studies into an important part of its strategy for becoming a world-class university. Over the past decade, the school has made an effort to conform to the norms of modern medicine, and has actively explored running a medical school within a comprehensive university, with important work in promoting all branches of basic and clinical medicine, as well as collaboration between medicine and other areas of study, with positive results. Funds for medical research and the number of projects have increased from about 25% when the two schools were combined, to half of the school’s total. Clinical medicine is close to ranking in the ESI’s top 0.1%, and the school is ready to begin competing as a world-class institution.
Currently the medical parts of Fudan University include Basic Medical School, Clinical Medical School, School of Public Health, School of Pharmacy, School of Nursing, Institute of Biomedical Science, Institute of Brain Science, Institute of Radioactive Medicine and Department of Laboratory Animal Science, and 11 affiliating hospitals. Shanghai Medical School as an extension of the University, is authorized to manage all medical parts in terms of education, research, discipline development, exchanges and development and planning.
Shanghai Medical College’s near- to mid-term goals are to build a comprehensive medical curriculum founded on an organ/system model; centered on the student, guided by clinical medicine, breaking the limits of clinical, theoretical, and preventative medicine and pharmacology; to build platforms for the medical core curriculum and for teaching of experimental medicine; to fully bring the process of talent development to the medical humanities education; to effectively promote the synthesis of basic medicine with clinical and medical science, as well as the interdisciplinary study of medical and non-medical domains, persistently transforming medical concepts, strengthening the development of priority subject areas, introducing new priority subject areas, consolidating the leading role of medicine and life medicine in China; elevating the international competitiveness of the affiliated hospitals’ medical treatment and research, and making a core contribution to the key city of Shanghai by building a medical center which ranks among the best in Asia.
Shanghai Medical University is a delegated agency of the school. The provost in charge of the medical department is also the medical college president. The organizational structure consists of the offices of Shanghai Medical University, the Medical Development Program Office, the Medical Research Management Office, the Medical Education Management Office, and the Medical Degree and Postgraduate Education Management Office.
Fudan has a total of 11 affiliated hospitals, of which eight are level three first-class hospitals, with a medical staff of more than 15,000, and a caseload of almost one fourth of the total in the city of Shanghai. For more details please see: ：Affiliated Hospitals
