By Fudan News Center

On September 1st, Fudan University welcomed graduate students of the  incoming class from all over the world. This year, Fudan University has enrolled 8,074 doctoral and master's students, including 100 students from Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan, as well as 443 foreign students from more than 70 countries and regions. The students matriculated on the four campuses of Handan, Fenglin, Jiangwan and Zhangjiang.

In the morning, Xu Zheng, Deputy Secretary of the Party Committee of Fudan University, Jin Li, Vice President of Fudan, Gou Yannan, Associate Vice President of Fudan, and heads of relevant departments came to the matriculation site and met the graduate students and their parents. Also, they expressed their warm regards to the working staff on site.

This year, the school continued to set up reception sites on each campus to provide one-stop service with warmth and care for new students, to facilitate the matriculation. The Graduate School, the Foreign Student Affairs Office and other departments and ministries have set up check-in points at the matriculation site. Different colleges and departments, Department of Safety and Security, Information Office, and Management Committees of each Graduate Residence have set up reception points. General Affairs Office, Department of Safety and Security, Information Office, Management Committees of each campus and other departments have provided logistical and security support for the students. The Heads of Graduate Student Admission Offices of various departments, secretaries of Graduate School, academic staff, and student counselors stayed at the site to answer new students’ questions.

The new students on the Handan campus can matriculate via the face recognition system. New students do not need to input identity information or have their identity cards checked. They can matriculate via the system within 2 seconds, during which the system recognizes their faces. After the device reads a student's name and department information, the student will also receive information such as orientation guide and venue arrangements. After the pilot test is completed, face recognition and other technologies will be applied to more occasions on campus, to provide better experience for teachers and students living and learning on campus.

This year, different colleges and departments have introduced new ideas and adopted characteristic and innovative service to welcome incoming students. With the theme of “Embracing a Better Self in Three Years”, the School of Philosophy invited students to write a postcard with messages for the future self and keep it for the future. The old students and new students of the International Cultural Exchange School worked together, to help with matriculation work. The School of Social Development and Public Policy, the Department of Macromolecular Science, and the Department of Materials Science arranged a team to shoot VCRs of the matriculation, invited new students to share their thoughts and hopes after they came to Fudan, and kept their memories of their first day at Fudan. The School of Journalism, the School of Information Science and Engineering designed special college Logos and KT boards for group photos. These activities were especially popular among the freshmen and left them nice and warm memory for the first day of their graduate study.
