Book launch at Fudan University: ‘The Romance of the Three Kingdoms’ Chinese Opera Collection

(Fudan News Center) - On January 5th, 2019, the book launch of The Romance of the Three Kingdoms Chinese Opera Collection were held at Fudan University. The book, funded by National Publishing Fund and published by Fudan University Press, is the most complete collection of Chinese opera adaptations of The Romance of the Three Kingdoms.

  

Over the centuries, a great many of opera adaptations have been created based on the four great classical novels of ancient China: Water Margin,Journey to the West,Dream of the Red Mansionand The Romance of Three Kingdoms. The first threenovels had their opera adaptations published decades ago; however, despite being the one adapted and performed the most, there were no complete opera collection for The Romance of Three Kingdoms until this day.

  

The authors and editors of the book spent six years choosing the best works from numerous transcripts and copies to fill the gap. By consulting Chinese opera experts and adding detailed notes, they help readers to have a good understanding of the scripts while ensuring the most accurate interpretation and a fun reading experience.  

  

The Romance of the Three Kingdoms Chinese Opera Collection consists of 587 opera adaptations of The Romance of the Three Kingdoms throughout past dynasties. Collected from libraries, universities and troupes in provinces and municipalities across China, the 471 complete scripts and 116 incomplete plays are compiled into 8 tomes (12 volumes): Yuan Dynasty Collection, Ming Dynasty Collection, Qing Dynasty Micellaneous Opera & Legend Collection(vol. 1,2), Qing Dynasty Folk Opera Collection, Late Qing Dynasty Kun Opera & Peking Operas Collection, Modern Peking Opera Collection(vol. 1,2,3), Shanxi Local Opera Collection, Contemporary Operas Collection(vol. 1,2). These scripts take major historical events and characters to stage, providing complete reading material for Chinas opera fan population, vital research material for scholars and abundant inspiring stories for artists working in different areas.

  

The release of The Romance of the Three Kingdoms Chinese Opera Collectionwill boost rejuvenation of traditional Chinese operas, transformation of traditional Chinese culture and cultural confidence in socialism with Chinese characteristics.
