The Qiu Shi Science & Technologies Foundation announced the recipients of the 2026 Qiu Shi Outstanding Scientist Award days ago. WANG Guozhen, chair professor at the Shanghai Center for Mathematical Sciences at Fudan University, received the award in mathematics for his contributions to homotopy theory and the computation of stable homotopy groups of spheres, including the development of the motivic deformation method and resolution of the final 126-dimensional case of the Kervaire invariant problem. He and Professor WANG Hong, who holds a joint appointment at New York University and the Institut des Hautes Études Scientifiques (IHES) in France, were the only two recipients in mathematics.

The Qiu Shi Science & Technologies Foundation was established by Dr. Cha Chi Ming (1914 – 2007) and his family in Hong Kong in 1994. The primary mission of the Foundation is to promote scientific and technological advancements for the benefit of humanity. The name Qiu Shi—meaning “seeking truth”—reflects the Foundation’s commitment to integrity and discovery. Through the Qiu Shi Awards, the Foundation honors outstanding researchers across disciplines including Life Sciences & Medicine, Mathematics, Physics, Engineering & Materials Science, Chemistry, and Sustainability Science. Since its founding, the Qiu Shi Awards have been granted to 367 exceptional Chinese scientists, including 3 Lifetime Achievement Awards, 33 Outstanding Scientist Awards, 204 Outstanding Young Scholar Awards, and 127 Outstanding Scientific Team Awards.
