Shanghai leader listens to Fudan experts and alumni for advice on epidemic control

On Feb. 18, Shanghai city top leader Li Qiang met eight medical experts, seven of whom are Fudan experts or alumni, at a panel discussion on COVID-19 prevention and control.

The panel shed light on prevention and control of COVID-19 in mega cities like Shanghai. Fudan experts and alumni contributed their insights to the medical treatment, research and containment strategies for COVID-19 as well as the betterment of the public health system.

On Feb. 23, Shanghai reported no new infected case, and out of 335 infected patients 261 were cured and discharged from the hospitals.

Let’s get to know these scientists from Fudan!


Wen Yumei

Wen is a professor from the Fudan School of Basic Medical Sciences. In 1999, Wen was elected a member of the Chinese Academy of Engineering. 

As a virologist, she is the pioneer in developing therapeutic vaccine for hepatitis B. During the 2003 SARS outbreak, already 69 years old at the time, she spent 19 days in the P3 laboratory in the First Military Medical University of Guangzhou (now Southern Medical University) with her colleagues. On Feb. 7, her team isolated nCov sampled from patients in Shanghai, which has facilitated research related to COVID-19 in Shanghai.


Peng Jing

Peng graduated in 1970 from the Department of Medicine of Shanghai First Medical college (now Shanghai Medical College of Fudan University). She has served in positions including counsellor of Shanghai Municipal Government, deputy director of Shanghai Municipal Health Bureau, and deputy director of Expert Advisory Committee of Shanghai Medical and Health Development Foundation. Peng has years of experience in disease control, health supervision, clinical medicine, maternal and child health, etc. 

Yuan Zheng’an 

Yuan graduated in 1989 from Shanghai Medical University (now Shanghai Medical College of Fudan University), majoring in preventive medicine. He is a top leader at Shanghai Center for Disease Control and Prevention.

With 30 years of experience in the health industry, Yuan and his colleagues have worked on measures to protect citizens in Shanghai during outbreaks of SARS, influenza A H1N1, hand-foot-and-mouth disease, avian influenza A H7N9, and MERS as well as other large-scale public health emergencies.

He Na 

He obtained his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Shanghai Medical University (now Shanghai Medical College of Fudan University) between 1985 and 1994. Now he is a professor of epidemiology and Dean of Fudan School of Public Health.

He has devoted himself to epidemiological research for nearly 20 years, specialized in AIDS, brucellosis, etc.


Qu Jieming

Qu obtained his master’s degree from Shanghai Medical university (Shanghai Medical College of Fudan University). Later obtaining a PhD degree in medicine, he is now a top leader at Ruijin Hospital and Chairman of the Chinese Thoracic Society of the Chinese Medical Association.

He is specialized in the diagnosis and treatment of complicated respiratory diseases. His research areas of interest include early diagnosis of pulmonary infection in immunocompromised patients; and molecular mechanism of lung injuries and inflammation and their comprehensive interventional measures.


Zhang Wenhong 

Zhang earned his bachelor’s, master’s and PhD degrees from Shanghai Medical University (Shanghai Medical College of Fudan University) between 1987 and 2000. He is the director of Infectious Diseases Department at Fudan-affiliated Huashan Hospital.

Zhang has long been committed to the diagnosis and treatment of emerging infectious diseases, joining in the frontline during SARS and H7N9 outbreaks. At this moment, he is heading the Shanghai Medical Expert Team for COVID-19 responsible for those critically ill patients.

To deepen the public understanding of COVID-19, Zhang had several articles published in “Hua Shan Gan Ran”, the official WeChat account of the Infectious Diseases Department at Huashan hospital. These popular science articles have drawn a large audience on and off the Fudan community.

Lu Hongzhou

Lu obtained his bachelor’s and master’s degrees at Shanghai Medical University (now Shanghai Medical College of Fudan University). He currently serves as a top leader at Fudan-affiliated Shanghai Public Health Clinical Center, where most of the infected patients in Shanghai receive medical treatment.

Lu has made important contributions to the fight against SARS, H5N1 influenza, H7N9 influenza and Ebola. In 2014, he was awarded the title of “Science Person of the Year” (“影响中国年度科技人物”) by China Newsweek for the discovery of the world’s first human case of H7N9 influenza. In 2015, Lu was awarded the title of “TOP 10 Most Beautiful Foreign Aid Doctor” (“中国十大最美援外医生”) by the National Health and Family Planning Commission for his outstanding contributions to the fight against Ebola hemorrhagic fever in West Africa.
