Fudan-Zhangjiang Innovation Center

Fudan is one of the leading science and technological Universities in China which has four campuses. Based in the vibrant Pudong area of Shanghai, the Fudan-Zhangjiang Innovation Center is a new government-university co-organized powerhouse of innovation that is set to embrace and engage with the challenges of modern civilization, human development and the environment optimization. Fudan’s broad mission statement revolves around the development and cultivation of a world class science talent pool linking to social service, cultural inheritance, translational innovation and international exchange and has been and remains the most active supporter of the China’s major developmental research strategies. Our strong comprehensive academic advantage has enabled us to build several world-class innovation centers in science and technology that address key problems of unmet medical or technological need. The Zhangjiang Fudan International Innovation Center has launched a new initiative consisting of three major inter-related research activities viz. International Human Phenome Project (Life and Healthcare), International Innovation Center of Micro-Nano Electronics and Quantum (Information Technology) and the multidisciplinary International Innovation Center of Brain and Brain-inspired Intelligence.

The International Human Phenome Project led by Professor Li Jin is being built to map, model and understand the continuum of human population phenotypes covering globally-representative cohorts from healthy to disease populations. The goal of this project is to understand gene-environment interactions that underpin common diseases and build a dynamic global atlas of human health and disease phenotypes that will be crucial to inform future healthcare policies, disease prevention and patient stratification for optimized therapeutic intervention.

The International Innovation Center of Brain and Brain-Inspired Intelligence has been making full use of Shanghai's strengths in brain science research by carrying out brain-inspired artificial intelligence algorithms, intelligent diagnosis of brain diseases, age related brain degeneration and related diseases, intelligent drug research and development, biologically-inspired intelligent robots, etc. This Nobel laureate-led team (Professor M Levitt) is also working on brain information acquisition chips, embedded brain disease treatment chips and intelligent computing chips based on human brain architectures. In recent years, Fudan University has obtained multiple breakthrough achievements with international influence in the fields of intelligent algorithms, intelligent diagnosis and treatment of major brain diseases, and hardware implementation of brain-inspired devices. The dynamic mapping of brain-functional networks was drawn for the first time and a series of original brain-like intelligent algorithms have also been successfully developed.

The International Innovation Center of Micro-Nano Electronics and Quantum will focus on developing the latest materials and devices of high-mobility, materials of luminescence and display, and sensing devices to support the development of emerging industries such as integrated circuits, new displays, and big data that underpins both Phenomic and Brain Science projects. With the joint effort of the State Key Laboratory of ASIC and the School of Microelectronics, Fudan University has established the Yangtze River Delta Integrated Circuit Design and Manufacturing Collaborative Innovation Center and is preparing the National Integrated Circuit Manufacturing Innovation Center and the International Joint Research Center for Microelectronics, to make Zhangjiang one of the world's leading microelectronics innovation centers.

Besides, Fudan international brain imaging centre has the most advanced brain scan machines in the world, including 3T, 7T, 11.7T, Connectome and other machines. With the substantial financial supports from the Shanghai municipal government and the launch of the Chinese Brain Project, a large dataset of the brain of various species is under construction which should considerably facilitate the research in brain science and AI. Currently, under the strict guidance of our ethical committees, we are actively working on animal models of rodents and monkeys which might also provide our colleagues with value models for brain research.

The integration of these novel innovation paradigms in the era of the 4th industrial revolution shows the ambition and determination of Fudan University, to seek cognate strategic partners and to contribute to the common challenges of humankind in the 21st Century.
